Amate (from the Nahuatl āmatl, meaning "paper") is a traditional, handmade bark paper used by indigenous artisans in Mexico for centuries, particularly in Guerrero and Puebla. It is produced by boiling and pounding the bark of fig, mulberry, or nettle trees. This sample of paper has had a second step of bleaching to whiten.
